Why the office costs you twice as much as it costs everyone else

The exhaustion at the end of an office day isn't from the work. It's from the performance running underneath it all day. Here's what masking is actually costing you — and what helps.

The exhaustion at the end of an office day isn't from the work. You could handle the work. It's from the performance running underneath the work, all day, every day.

The thing nobody measures

In an open-plan office, a neurotypical employee has one job: their job. You have that job, plus a second one running parallel the entire time. Scanning the room. Tracking who's watching. Managing your face when you're overwhelmed or bored. Suppressing every impulse your brain throws at you in an environment built to overstimulate it. Looking confident when you're panicking. Looking busy when you're frozen.

That second job is called masking. It runs all day in the background and it never clocks off. Most people in your office have no idea it's happening. You probably didn't have a name for it until recently.

Where the cost shows up

By 3pm, you're done. Not because the work was too hard, but because keeping up that performance on top of the actual work burned through every reserve you had. The meeting went fine. The email got answered. You held it together. But you're exhausted in a way you can't explain to anyone who didn't feel what you felt all day.

The coffee that used to help doesn't cut through it anymore, so you have more of it, which wrecks your sleep, which means tomorrow starts from a deeper deficit. You lose sleep before deadlines not because you can't do the work, but because you can't tell whether the version of you that shows up tomorrow will be the capable one or the one who spends four hours staring at a blank document.

That inconsistency is the thing. Some weeks you're sharp, reliable, ahead of your inbox. Other weeks you're white-knuckling through the most basic tasks while smiling at people like nothing's happening. You genuinely don't know which version turned up to work this quarter — and neither do they.

Working from home isn't the answer either

WFH reduces the masking. That alone is genuinely restorative. But the anxiety doesn't disappear, it just changes shape. Now it's the backlog that's quietly grown because without the ambient pressure of the office, your brain keeps choosing the slightly less urgent thing. It's the Teams meeting that might expose that you haven't been keeping up. It's the message that's been sitting there for two days because you haven't figured out what to say.

At home you mask less. You also lose some of the external structure that sometimes kept you on track. There's no perfect environment for an ADHD brain, just different trade-offs at different costs.

What actually helps

The goal isn't to find the right room. It's to reduce the cognitive load that masking and anxiety create, so you have more of yourself left over for the actual work.

Start with the first fifteen minutes of your day. If you spend that time deciding where to start, you've already burned your best cognitive fuel on a non-task. A simple system for opening your day, one that requires no decisions, gives that fuel back. Build recovery into your week as maintenance, not as a reward for surviving. And be clear with yourself about which environments cost you the most, so you can make smarter choices about where you do your hardest work.
